I liked this book quite a bit, particularly for its interweaving of a number of authentic cultural strands of late 19th Century England. The basic situation is that a group of "psychic researchers" offers a substantial cash award to anyone who can demonstrate a "paranormal" feat that can't be figured out by the group. A self-proclaimed "evolved human" shows up and accomplishes a baffling feat, but since the feat unexpectedly involves his vanishing without a trace, if he should show up again, he might be awarded the cash. The wealthy inventor who organized and hosts the "research" appeals to Holmes to figure out the trick. It's not so much a defect of this particular novel, but rather of ALL novels with this sort of plot, that the "conjuring trick" involves so much elaborate preparation, and the secret assistance of so many people (at least 3 in this case), that in the real world something would invariably go wrong. The personalities of Holmes and Watson are well-captured, and the events recorded are not entirely implausible, with the result that I enjoyed the novel all the way through and welcome more by this author. Not much that is particularly dramatic happens, mainly we just get an account of Holmes doggedly figuring out the ins and outs of the mystery, with considerable help from Watson and Lestrade.
1896. A man vanishes from inside a locked room during an experiment held by a metaphysical society to prove that psychic phenomena are real. The chairman of the society, a notable inventor, hires Sherlock Holmes to find a rational, not supernatural, explanation for the disappearance because he believes the man was a fraud and would be out ten thousand pounds if he were genuine. Holmes is intrigued and takes on the case. It's a fairly straightforward affair, though it requires careful reading and a memory for names. The interstitial chapters are crucial as well. This is a pastiche where you're probably not going to figure out the trick before the revelation -- I certainly didn't -- because Holmes is clearly ahead of Watson and the reader, though figuring it out and proving it are two very different things, and the latter takes some time.I'm a tough critic of Sherlock Holmes pastiches, because there are certain things I want and a certain voice I expect, and I will drop a pastiche like a hot potato if it starts not feeling right. On the one hand, I felt it needed another plot complication or red herring. On the other hand, it felt a little decompressed for a Sherlock Holmes novel. Still, Purser-Hallard wrote a decent story of Sherlock Holmes' investigation a possible supernatural mystery, and he did so in a way that felt true enough to the Canon that kept me engaged until the end.
To be honest I'm not all that much of a Holmes fan, and bought this one largely because I'd read, and loved, Purser-Hallard's previous work (the Devices trilogy). But I've read plenty enough Sherlock Holmes to recognize when someone has done a truly excellent job of channeling Conan Doyle's voice and keeping the characters true to their origins while still finding something new to say about them (perhaps it was a subtle - almost imperceptible - updating of some of the characters' attitudes in the book that made me like this more than the originals). A damn fine read.
One of the best Sherlock Holmes imitations I have read. The tone, the plot and the characters were all so true to Conan Doyle, and the book is very well written. Highly recommend for fans of Holmes who are looking for "new" stories. I really hope this author writes more of these books.
Even tho I am the first to leave a review, I will not go over the plot and characters. Suffice it to say that this was an extremely well-written book, in the style of the original Sherlock Holmes stories but BETTER. The plot was original and developed throughout the story, with the revelation, of course, making it seem extremely probable. There were a few litItle side events throughout that served to make Holmes and Watson seem more human. The characters of Holmes and Watson were very well done, and their interactions with each other and the other characters was believable. I should probably have given five stars, but I reserve that fifth star for other than "fun fiction" with some moral or point. This was just plain fun! I am looking forward to reading more from this author. Thank you Mr. P-H! More, please!
